Dear International Students,

It is a great pleasure and honor to be here again for another commencement. I delivered my commencement speech in English last year because I was a bit worried that you wouldn’t fully understand Chinese, which actually gave me the opportunity to reflect on what we can do to strengthen the Chinese education in SIE, thus, this year, I decided to deliver my speech in Chinese. One thing I discovered during my visits to other institutions abroad is that, in addition to mastering the disciplinary knowledge and understanding the Chinese culture, an international student can do a lot more for his own country, for China, and for the world if he can express and communicate in Chinese. This discovery prevailed further during my last visit to three southeastern countries: A talented person who has Chinese experiences and can communicate in Chinese is critical for enterprises, domestic in China or overseas.

Despite the emphasis on the importance of Chinese, I feel that the majority of you might not understand my commencement speech fully. Thus, I have prepared the English version of my speech. The other reason to deliver the speech in Chinese is that I hope more Chinese students will understand you, international students, more and what the education of international students involves better through my speech.

Reminiscing your learning journey and live at BUCT, you have created one shining line of vistas: not only did you bring your cultures into BUCT campus, you sanctioned interactions between Chinese and multiple cultures creating sparks of wisdom. From your shyness during your early days at BUCT to grown to be a part of the BUCT family now, I know your hearts must be fretful having to leave China. I still remember your countless knocks on my office door and numerous WeChat messages offering your valuable thoughts and suggestions on how we can improve the international education at BUCT, which tells me the fact that you are already a member of the BUCT family. I will remember all of you, your phenomenal performances at the International Cultural Festival. I know you would like to leave your legacy of passions here at BUCT. Time flies! Three years went by like a blink of your eyes, but your names and passions have been engraved on the SIE honorable alumni wall and the BUCT history of foreigner education.

Maybe cultural differences and the conditions on campus did bring your challenges and complaints during your studying and living journey, but I believe they are not the obstacles hindering our interaction and collaboration. Just like your cricket and our table tennis, even though we were not able to quickly adapt to the sports, both of them made the Olympic competition list, simply because they represent and advocate the positive energy of the athletic spirit, which are models that we admire and respect. The new campus will be available in next semester and will provide better facilities and environment.

China are trying to achieve a comprehensively well-off society in order to attain the Chinese dream of the great renaissance for the nation. With the ‘One Belt One Road’ strategic plan, China implemented policies that attract more international students with the aim to develop the infrastructure in the ‘One Belt One Road’ countries and strive to serve for world peace and prosperity. We truly hope that we have your understanding, participation and support to carry out your Dreams, the Dreams of your Nation; Carry out your Chinese Dreams; Lead us to the World Dream!

Congratulations for your graduation. Some of you will continue your PhD program in BUCT or other universities in China, others will move on to a new job in China or in your country. Wherever you go and whatever you do, you represent BUCT, which has been engraved on you. You will all be our forever outstanding alumni. I hope all of you still can remember the SIE motto of ‘Virtue, Innovation, Openness, responsibility’, which will lead you to a happy life and prosperous future with your diligence and wisdom

You are graduating today. Even though I did not invite you to a feast, I sincerely hope that you will carry on the BUCT legacy:

1.   Hope you can recommend BUCT to your social circle. The Chinese students scale is almost fixed, but the scale increasing for international student is very possible. I hope that the number of our international student increase to the extent where BUCT has to build a brand new auditorium to accommodate the big crowd.

2.    I hope to have your support and help when we have BUCT faculty and staff visiting your country. Riding with the “One Belt One Road” strategic plans and internationalization policies, I hope President will allocate more funding so that we can visit your countries and advocate the collaboration between the nations. The more invitations coming from you and your future affiliations, the more likely President will support us with more funding.

3.  I hope you can become the ambassador for China, brining China to the world and the world to China. I truly hope that we might find you become your nation’s consulate or ambassador the next time we visit the Chinese consulate in your country.

As the ocean admits hundreds of rivers, we should have the capacity of tolerance. Through your effort in advocating the interlink among world cultures and human beings, we’ll be able to achieve world peace and prosperity. You have graduated now. Remember to come back and visit us. BUCT will always be here waiting!

Thank you! Miss you! Love you! Class of 2017,  Bon Voyage!!!!
